Jude the Obscure 2019

Breeder David Austin, 1989

Aan sommige rozen in de tuin hangt ook een mooie dierbare herinnering.
Toen mijn schoonvader nog leefde namen we hem diverse dagen mee
om dingen te gaan bezichtigen in Nederland. In 2010 bezochten we samen
gaan. De bloemen veranderden in bruine ballen. Wat ik opmerkte is
dat sommige Austinrozen het hete en droge weer liefhebben. Ze groeien
eindelijk en hebben de aflopen 2 jaar heel veel bloemen.

Some roses bring back memorie's. When my father in law was still
alive we took him a couple of times in a year with us to see things
in Holland. In 2010 we visited a rosenursery together and this rose
was a gift from him to me. The first years this rose was'nt what I had
in mind. The weather was still normal at these years (rainy summers)
The flowers did not open up but ended up as big brown balls.
The last 2 years we've had hot and dry summers. Suddenly the
Austinroses were starting to grow well. They do much better in
the hot and dry weather.

At the end of the day it's beautiful to see the rose closes it's flowers.

The end of September

Have a wonderful day

  1. Your Jude the Obscure is beautiful. It was interesting to read in your comment where you said "back when the weather was normal". I'm in Missouri, USA. No matter what the politicians try to tell us, we gardeners know that the weather is not like it used to be even 15 years ago. Here I notice that it seems much windier than it used to be. For about 4 years now, it is always windy when I am working in my garden. I especially notice it when I am spreading flower seeds, and the wind tries to blow them away. That didn't happen so often years ago.

One thing remains the same. As soon as all of my roses are in their first full bloom and looking beautiful, here come terrible thunderstorms and wind to knock all of the petals to the ground.

    1. Hello Susie,
Over the last 2 years we've had very dry and hot summers. And yes wintertime is also not what it was before.
It's terrible to see your roses destroid by the weather. I hope it will be better this year.
I live my life thinking what the best way is to protect our planet. I hope it will help.
      Have a wonderful day

  2. Good morning dear Marijke
I have Jude the obscure too, but it is´nt doing very well. The first years it was really good, now it has difficulties in flowering. The fragrance is fantastic, but sunshine and no rain is the best for it.

    1. Good morning dear Lisbeth,
The first 3 years it only did bring 5 flowers. So it was the following years. I was often wondering what
I was doing wrong. And other Austin roses did the same. The last two summers were showing me
that a lot of Austin roses need heath and drought to show the beautiful roseshrub where we were
looking for when planted. The last two years it finally growned and had lots of beautiful flowers. I also
did not know that this roses don't like hard back pruning. Advised is to take of not more than 1/3 of the hight. (I am not a scientist it is what I notice in the garden).
      Have wonderful day

  3. Good afternoon dear Marijke,

I had this one too, but it died very quickly here. You have a much better climate for the english roses than here. Only a few of mine Austinroses thrive here.
I love them very much, but they don't love my climate ;)
    Very beautiful photos!
    Have a nice day.

    1. Good afternoon dear Marit,
It's so sad that this rose died in your garden. The flowers of the English roses are fantastic. But in
my garden not the healthy's. A lot of people grow them in a big container. They have greenhouses
and bring them inside in wintertime. I have no greenhouse and no forklift and the roses with pot
are having theire heavy weight. This is an old Austin and many new ones are coming on the market.
      Maybe they will do better.
      Have a wonderful day
